The Shepparton-Wanganui Lions Club has made the first donation in the club’s history, donating tools to the Shepparton Men’s Shed at GV Woodworkers.

The club, formed in March, has been collecting money at the gates of Deakin Reserve at Shepparton Bears home games this year, with more coming from members’ donations.

GV Woodworking runs the Men’s Shed on Packham St.

Club president Marg Stewart said the men’s shed was chosen as the first donation because it hadn’t received as much support from the community as other groups.

“We thought the tools would help them along the way, and the club suggested what they would like,” she said.

She said the city’s less fortunate needed more support, and organisations such as the Lions were well placed to lend a helping hand.

Shepparton-Wanganui Lions currently has 22 members but the club is seeking more people to join.

Member Omen Ndlovu said the needs of the community were growing and Shepparton-Wanganui Lions were trying to support them.

“People who are on the lower social rung need support, their needs are growing,” he said.

“Post COVID and some of the stresses in the community are threatening those in need, and there are people or individuals who can lend a hand.

“Being a member of the Lions Club is not an expensive thing, but ... what is it that I can give to somebody who has no means of helping themselves?”

He said the club would be looking to make more donations in the coming months.
